Getting dressed is such a routine part of the day for most of us. Decisions on what to wear are based on what kind of activity we will be involved with, where we are going or what the weather is like.
However, some entirely different considerations about what to wear and what not to wear are found in the 3rd chapter of Colossians. Who knew the apostle Paul was an expert on the topic! Let it be understood, he doesn’t actually discuss articles of clothing but Christ-like virtues that are to be part of every believer’s wardrobe.
“Since God chose you to be the holy people He loves, you must clothe yourselves with tenderhearted mercy, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience…. Clothe yourselves with love which binds us all together in perfect harmony” v 12, 14.(NLT). The Message Bible states it even more clearly – “Wear love. It’s your basic all purpose garment. Never be without it”. (v14. MSG)
Some fashions are here today and gone tomorrow but these virtues are timeless and time tested. Do you want to look like Jesus? If so, invite Him to help you do an inventory on your spiritual closet. What do you need to toss out, what do you need to keep? Are there things you need to stop doing, or start doing? He wants to be part of it all. Don’t be afraid to ask Him for a fashion makeover!
